Dear Emily,
We are currently curating the abstracts for the upcoming 48th
(Philadelphia) Annual Drosophila Research Conference, for FlyBase.
I am writing in connection with your abstract:
The stall gene is an extra-ovarian regulator of follicle formation that encodes
an ADAM-TS metalloprotease.
You suggest that CG3622 corresponds to stall (FBgn0003529), though the
map data we have for the two gene records is quite different. The
60B8--C5 location we have for stl is based on an abstract - though no
basis for that location is given (Jones et al., 1999, Dev. Biol.
210(1): 216) and the 59B2 is based on the genome annotation. Given
that discrepancy, I'd just like to confirm that I'm merging the correct
two gene records.
Best regards,
Rachel.

Hi Rachel,
Yes, you are merging the correct gene records: the localization by
Jones (in the Cronmiller lab as well) was based on the breakpoints of a deficiency
that failed to complement stall. However, I showed that there was actually a second
mutation on the deficiency chromosome and that stall was not removed by the
deleted region. That's the source of the discrepancy. Claire and I are
preparing a manuscript for publication on the identification of stall, so that
this will be clarified in the literature in addition to my Drosophila
Conference abstract. The cytology should correspond to CG3622 (59B2) and my
recombination data puts stl around 2-100.5 to 101.
In addition, I don't believe that a paper exists to correspond with the
citation listed above for Jones: the work was included in her UVA Master's
thesis but she never published as first author elsewhere. Perhaps it would be good to verify
that with Claire Cronmiller . before removing the citation
from Flybase.
Thanks for checking up!
Emily
