Subject: FB Help Mailer: 875 Personal communication About a year ago, I received an e-mail request from Flybase about an abstract I submitted for the 2006 fly meeting that detailed the identification and characterization of a locus that interacted with TGF-beta signalling. We named this locus iconoclast (ico), because it appeared to interact with the TGF-beta signalling pathway in a non-cannonical fashion. (It also fit in with the "maverick" theme of other TGF-betas). You had requested that we let you know the identity of the interacting gene as soon as we determined it so that ico could be referenced in flybase and curated properly. I am writing to let you know that our sequencing results (as well as rescue experiments) confirm that ico is CG4567. Recently, mutations in the human homologue of CG4567 have been shown to cause Combined Oxidative Phosphorylation Deficiency in children, and we are currently developing a fly model for the study of this disease. We are preparing to submit our first paper on the characterization of of ico (expression, pheontoypes, etc.). I have submitted an abstract about our work for the GSA fly meeting this year with myself and my advisor, T.E. Haerry, as the authors.
