Subject: FB Help Mailer: 354 New gene (Skadu) not currently annotated
Dear colleagues,
I am writing to alert you to the presence of a 'new' gene that is currently unannottated in Flybase's current release. The gene sits about 1.5 kb upstream of gene CG15256, and is well conserved in other members of the melanogater species group.
This gene (which has an intron, see below) is derived from a HP1 gene (we think HP1e). However, the new gene has only preserved its chromoshadow domain. hence we would like to name this gene Skadu, for the Afrikaans name (named by my colleague Danielle Vermaak, who first discovered this gene). We are currently working hard to elucidate its function and a oublication is anticipated in a year's time.
The coding sequence of the gene is...
    ATGGAATCAGCCGTACGAAAGCGCAGAGTTCCCTTTCTCCAGGACAAT
