Dear FlyBase curators, There is some confusion about the proper name of a commonly used dominant Toll mutant. In publications it is usually called Toll10b, but in FlyBase it is listed as Toll8, without references, and this has caused some problems. The name Toll10b seems to have priority (see my attached correspondence with Janos Szabad). Please tell me if there are good reasons to stick to the Toll8 terminology, or change it in Flybase. Best wishes, Dan Comments about the origin of Tl10b from János Szabad in correspondence with Dan Hultmark: The ever first publication where Toll10b showed up is this: Erdélyi, M. and Szabad, J., Isolation and characterization of dominant female sterile mutations of Drosophila melanogaster. I. Mutations on the third chromosome. Genetics 122, 111-127, 1989. Toll10b originated in the 10th EMS-mutagenesis and was the second (b) candidate in that set sometime in 1983. We had the lab name 10b for quite some time. We reverted it and complementation analyses with toll recessive alleles showed that it was a gain-of-function toll allele. From that day on it was called Toll10b until it was mysteriously renamed.
