Dear Steven,
As to Vn, if I had to guess it is a dominant negative allele of vn, because we found that expressing vn without the EGF domain gave a vein loss phenotype. So I would expect Vn expresses a mutant protein. Calling it Vn dominant sounds fine. I assume that allele is no longer in existence anywhere?
Thanks again.
Best,
Mandy

Can I ask you about vn (vein) vs Vn (Vein)?
That is:
/reports/FBgn0003984.html
/reports/FBgn0003985.html
The similarity in gene symbol/name here (ie. only distinguished by case) is causing confusion for curators & FlyBase users.
Changing the official FlyBase symbol of the uncloned gene 'Vein' to something else will at least reduce confusion.
There doesn't appear to be any clear evidence that vn is actually the same as Vn, so a simple merge of these gene reports isn't appropriate.
So, we're thinking of changing the 'Vn' symbol and fullname to 'Vein-dominant'.
Does this sound OK to you?
Steven.
