We recently published a paper in which we gave a name to a previously unnamed fly gene, CG4996. This name was Vps54L (the paper is Gillingham et al 2014 Dev Cell 31, 358). Shortly afterwards another group published a paper on the mammalian orthologue using a different name. To avoid confusion we have discussed the name, and included the Human Genome Nomenclature Committee, and we agreed on the new name VPS50 for the human gene. Thus I was wondering if FlyBase would be willing to also change the name of the Drosophila gene to Vps50 for the sake of consistency. So far no one else has published on the gene, and so if it is done now it could help avoid confusion in the future.
