Historically, for phenotypes that involve an insertion of a 'position-independent' transgene where the specific insertion site of the transgene is not expected to be important in terms of the phenotype produced (for example, 'promoter fusion' constructs where different insertion lines are expected to give qualitatively the same phenotype), the entry used in the genotype by FlyBase has been an object corresponding to the transgenic construct (and not a specific insertion of that construct).
As phenotypic data is integrated into the Alliance of Genome Resources, objects representing 'promoter fusion' transgenic constructs in genotypes will be converted to an 'unspecified' insertion; this will make the FlyBase curated genotypes more comparable with those of other Model Organism Databases.
The symbol of these 'unspecified' insertions will consist of the transgenic construct (e.g. P{XXX}) followed by 'unspecified' as the insertion identifier portion (e.g. P{XXX}unspecified).
This reference lists all the unspecified insertion entries that are required for conversion of genotypes to fit the Alliance of Genome Resources model.
(Note that for transgenic constructs that are expected to be position-dependent, such as enhancer traps or mis-expression constructs, FlyBase already creates a specific insertion entry for each insertion, and genotypes will use these specific insertion entries in the Alliance of Genome Resources model).
