Comments

Total transcripts from the Dsim\412 element increase with the number of Dsim\412 copies in the chromosomes when this number is low and then decrease for high Dsim\412 copy numbers. The expression of Dsim\412 varies greatly between populations.

Full-sized and rearranged copies of the Dsim\412 element are located in both the euchromatin and heterochromatin.

The copy number of the Dsim\412 element shows a negative correlation with minimum temperature.

A lower proportion of copia, mdg1 and 412 element insertion sites on the X chromosome, from various populations of D.melanogaster and D.simulans, in comparison with autosomes suggests that selection against the detrimental effects of TE insertions in the major force containing TE copies in populations.

Insertion sites of Dsim\412 along the chromosomes show a tendency to aggregate in the distal and proximal ends of the 2R arm, and in several local regions along the 3R arm.

Transposition and excision rates of the Dsim\412 element have been estimated in five D.simulans populations which differ in their average copy number of Dsim\412 elements. The rate of transposition is 1-2 x 10-3, independent of copy number. No excision has been detected.
