Dyak\HeT-A elements are found in head-to-tail tandem arrays in telomeric heterochromatin. Nearly half the Dyak\HeT-A element is non-coding and shows a distinctive imperfect repeat pattern of A-rich elements. The Dyak\HeT-A element does not encode reverse transcriptase. These features are also found in D.melanogasterHeT-A elements.
"HeT-A" elements may have arisen from ancestral "TAHRE" elements by loss of open reading frame 2 of the "TAHRE" element.
The distinctive transcription patterns of HeT-A and TART-element are conserved in D.yakuba.
The Dyak\HeT-A element does not encode its own reverse transcriptase.
