The Dbuz\P-element is divergent from other Drosophila P elements in nucleotide and protein sequence, transposase-encoding gene structure and expression pattern.
The Dbuz\P-element has 3bp terminal inverted repeats (TIRs) and 16-17bp sub-TIRs. The distance between the beginning of the TIR and the end of the sub-TIR is 32bp at the 5' end and 30bp at the 3' end. This segment may be equivalent to the 31bp TIRs seen in the D. melanogaster P-element (no equivalent to the D. melanogaster 11bp sub-TIR is found in the Dbuz\P-element).

The Dbuz\P-element is probably the autonomous element that mobilises the Dbuz\BuT5 MITE.
