rTrpm8 corresponds to the nonselective cation channel encoded by the Rattus norvegicus Trpm8 gene (RGD:620762). The channel is activated by menthol and also by 'cold' thermal stimulus in the range 8-28[o]C (PMID:11882888). rTrpm8 can be used as a tool to activate neurons, by reducing the temperature below 18[o]C to activate the channel. At higher temperatures (24[o]C), menthol vapour can be used to activate the channel and stimulate neuron activity (FBrf0207505). For a comparison of rTrpm8 with other neuron activation tools, see PMID:26240426.
