BicC1/Df(2L)RA5 adults show reduced survival rate (while BicC1/+ heterozygotes survive normally) and display deformations of their Malpighian tubules (disorganization of the tubular epithelial cells, large, often numerous cysts) from an early age. These abnormal enlargements (cysts) are filled with fluid and contain dark crystalline particles. The cyst formation appears to increase over time and by day 30, the mutant flies display multiple cysts in both tubules and prominent deformities of the anterior terminal tubule.

BicC1/Df(2L)RA5 mutants survive worse under high-salt diet stress conditions compared to wild-type, although they feed on it normally.
