In mutant ovarioles, the number of follicle cells and germ cells is reduced. This is not due to massive cell death.

Homozygous third larval instar ovaries have a normal overall morphology, and have the normal number and location of germline stem cells. Ovarioles of newly eclosed homozygous females generally have 1-3 egg chambers (instead of 5 as in wild type). 42% have no germline cells, 39% have undifferentiated germline cells and 17% have differentiated germline cells in the germarium. Ovarioles of newly eclosed fs(1)Yb1/Df(1)w258-45 females generally have 1-3 egg chambers (instead of 5 as in wild type). 8% have no germline cells, 5% have undifferentiated germline cells and 88% have differentiated germline cells in the germarium. Germline clonal analysis indicates that fs(1)Yb is not required in the germline for fertility.

Semi-sterile in females, and causes a less severe effect on ovary morphology than fs(1)Ya4 or fs(1)Ya6.

Females lay reduced numbers of eggs, most of which remain vacuolated after deposition; a few develop into normal-appearing adults. No effect on males.

Genetic Interactions

Heat-shocking fs(1)Yb1 heterozygotes that carry one or two copies of the hhhs.PI transgene induces the formation of large stalks composed of overproliferated somatic cells. Heat-shocking fs(1)Yb1 homozygotes (with hhhs.PI) induces the formation of large interfollicular stalks. Heat-shocking fs(1)Yb1 homozygotes with one or two copies of hhhs.PI, increases the number of egg chambers per ovariole, and increases the number of morphologically normal germaria in a dose dependant manner. Fertility is not restored.
