The average number of crystal cells per embryo is reduced in homozygous stage 13-14 embryos compared to wild type.

65-75% of the hemizygous or homozygous lethality of Catsup1 occurs between the late embryonic period and the second larval instar, while approximately 12-17% of the lethality occurs during the third larval instar stage. Females with homozygous germline clones deposit few, morphologically defective eggs that appear to have arrested at mid- to late-stage oogenesis. The eggs are flaccid when laid or collapse during egg deposition, suggesting that the chorion is weak or absent. Intact eggs have rudimentary dorsal appendages that are fused to the eggshell, or lack the dorsal appendages altogether. The anteriocentral region of the follicle is comprised of large cuboidal cells reminiscent of nurse cells, with a yolk-filled oocyte occupying the posterior end.
