Detailed Description

In twi3, sna19 double mutants fail to form a regular midgut epithelium. However the segregation into principal midgut epithelial cells, large basophilic midgut cells and adult midgut precursors still occurs.

Endodermal primordium fails to invaginate, though during the course of germ band extension cells ingress into the embryo and attach to the posterior surface of the stomodeum. Thus even though the early morphogenesis of the anterior midgut is abnormal, the lack of twi function is without consequence for the ultimate fate of the anterior midgut.

The stomatogastric nervous system is intact in twi3 sna18 double mutant stage 16 embryos, but the corpus cardiacum is absent.

Embryos mutant for both sna and twi do not form an anterior midgut or a stomodeum.
