Ubiquitous expression of bossHSB results in the development of multiple R7 photoreceptor cells. These ectopic R7 cells are not produced by bossHSB in a sev14 background.

boss is strongly expressed on the apical membranes of all cells anterior and posterior to the morphogenetic furrow: all sev-expressing cells have access to the boss inductive cue. Ectopic expression of bossHSB causes the production of extra R7 cells. Double mutant sev14; bossHSB adult eye completely lacks R7 cells.
