Description and Uses
Description

P{hsp70-boss} can be used as a phenotypic enhancer trap element. It contains an Hsp70 promoter that drives expression of the boss cDNA. In the absence of heat shock, the Hsp70 promoter acts as a basal promoter. If inserted into the genome, a neighbouring enhancer may activate expression of the boss cDNA via the Hsp70 promoter. By screening for insertions that rescue the boss mutant phenotype, genes that are expressed in a narrow window during eye development (when boss is normally expressed) can be identified.
