Mutant males lack 30-minute courtship memory after 1 hour of conditioning in a courtship conditioning assay. This defect is significantly suppressed if the males are fed 0.1mM 20-hydroxy-ecdysone for 10 minutes immediately prior to conditioning.

The frequency of spontaneous release (miniature excitatory junctional currents) at the neuromuscular junction is reduced compared to wild type.

Severe defects in initial learning and in 60 minute memory retention, measured in negatively reinforced olfactory discrimination paradigm.

In an odour avoidance paradigm exhibits significantly reduced learning.

Expression of DopEcRScer\UAS.cIb under the control of Scer\GAL4Mef2.247.Switch in adult mushroom body neurons (using RU486 to limit the timing of expression) does not restore courtship memory in a courtship conditioning assay in rut1084 males. However, if these flies are also fed 0.01mM 20-hydroxy-ecdysone (a concentration that does not rescue courtship memory in rut1084 single mutants), significant rescue of courtship memory is seen.
