Lethality acts in the embryonic-larval stages. Homozygotes show A4-A7 transformed to A6, and are semi-sterile. Heterozygous males show a transformation of A4 to a segment primarily A5 in character, though with some A6 characteristics. These males show no A7. Heterozygous females appear normal. Abd-BCst/Df(3R)P9 or Abd-BCst/Df(3R)StP234 animals usually die prior to pupation. Escapers have phenotypes similar to the homozygotes, however the transformed segments are less clearly A6 in character, being intermediate between A5 and A6. Abd-BCst/Abd-BStP16 or Abd-BCst/Abd-BStP8 show a much more extreme transformation of A6-A7 to A5, including a large abdominal segment 7. In females this transformation can only be observed in A7, which is larger than normal, having a sternite which exhibits the A3-A6 bristle pattern.
The phenotype of Abd-BCst/+ closely resembles that of Abd-BMcp-1/Abd-BMcp-1.
