Expression of Ras64B^V12.sev leads to a rough eye phenotype.

Rhabdomere of R7 photoreceptor appears between those of R1 and R6 both apically and basally. Diameter of this rhabdomere is larger than that of a normal R7. R7 cell is transformed to R1-6 identity. Mosaic analysis reveals that this effect is autonomous. The altered R7 cell fate caused by ro^hs.sev1 is dependent on sev and boss function. In flies that carry two copies of ro^hs.sev1 the eyes are roughened, the lenses have central holes (the 'blueberry eye' phenotype). Ommatidia are not stratified. Photoreceptor organization is not preserved.
