Rhabdomere of R7 photoreceptor appears between those of R1 and R6 both apically and basally. Diameter of this rhabdomere is larger than that of a normal R7. R7 cell is transformed to R1-6 identity. Mosaic analysis reveals that this effect is autonomous. The altered R7 cell fate caused by rohs.sev1 is dependent on sev and boss function. In flies that carry two copies of rohs.sev1 the eyes are roughened, the lenses have central holes (the 'blueberry eye' phenotype). Ommatidia are not stratified. Photoreceptor organization is not preserved.
