Normal looking individualisation complexes (ICs) are seen in the testes of X/kl-3104b males. Spermatid tails show irregularities.
A few males produce a small number of progeny (average 0.1 progeny/male). Male sterile in combination with Ts(1Lt;YSt)W27, Ts(1Lt;YSt)E15 or Ts(1Lt;YSt)F12. Male fertile in combination with Ts(1Lt;YSt)V24. kl-3104b testes show degradation in the basal testicular region. Sperm are absent from the seminal vesicles. Postmeiotic nuclei show almost normal nuclear condensation, except for the appearance of occasional singular needle-shaped nuclear heads. The organised bundles of the elongated sperm heads are eventually disintegrated in the basal region of the testis before the spermatids reach maturity. Defects are seen in the flagellar axoneme.
Late spermatogenesis is disrupted, defective sperm are not mobile.
Male sterile phenotype can be reverted in the presence of a transposase source.
Revertants prove the single P{PZ} insertion is the cause of the male sterile phenotype.
