Embryos heat shocked for 20 mins at stage 5 show reduced numbers of tracheal cells per metamere and the absence of tracheal metameres. The embryos develop normally segmented larvae, which hatch but lack an interconnected tracheal system. They move slowly and die shortly after hatching. Heat shocks during stages 6-8 do not affect the trachea. Heat shocks at stage 9 affect the migration of dorsal trunk cells causing the cells to keep on migrating after stage 15, causing ectopic branches which retain their dorsal trunk identity.
