UASt regulatory sequences drive expression of the N-terminal 143 amino acids of E(spl)m7-HLH (including the bHLH and adjacent putative helical domains but not the C terminal WRPW tetrapeptide) fused to the VP16 transcriptional activation domain (amino acids 412 to 490).

Expression of HLHm7Act.Scer\UAS.T:Hsim\VP16 under the control of Scer\GAL4ptc-559.1 gives rise to ectopic bristles along the anteroposterior boundary of the wing and on the notum.
Scer\GAL4h-1J3-mediated expression causes the development of extra bristles on the notum (dramatic transformation of cuticle into bristles), pupae are dissected out of the pupal case. Scer\GAL430A-mediated expression causes the development of extra bristles on the leg. Scer\GAL469B-mediated expression causes the development of extra bristles on the wing as well as ectopic wing vein tissue. Scer\GAL4ptc-559.1-mediated expression induces ectopic campaniform sensilla at the anterior crossvein. Scer\GAL4455.2-mediated expression induces ectopic sensory organ mother cells in the presumptive scutellum region of the wing disc.
Expression of HLHm7Act.Scer\UAS.T:Hsim\VP16 under the control of Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237 induces bristle formation, even in a Df(1)sc10-1/Y background.
Scer\GAL4455.2-mediated expression in the absence of ac and sc (Df(1)sc10-1) allows no development of ectopic SMCs and bristles, lack of ac (In(1)y3PLsc8R) or sc (scM6) reduces the number of ectopic bristles. Deletion of sc promoter and coding sequence (In(1)sc8Lsc4R) does not suppress the formation of ectopic bristles.
