chbv40 testes are aberrant and diminutive.

Third instar larval brains exhibit polyploidy and circular mitotic figures and are generally arrested in metaphase or prometaphase. Most cells show highly condensed chromatin and polyploid cells, cells with circular mitotic figures and other abnormal anaphases are seen.

Almost all metaphases have an even number of chromosomes. Circular mitotic figures and monopolar anaphases are evident. Mutant chromosomes fail to separate at prometaphase.

The ganglia of homozygous larvae contain highly polyploid cells. Unipolar chromosome spindles are seen. Circular mitotic figures (circles of chromosomes with centromeres pointing inwards and chromatid arms pointing outwards) are seen in homozygous neuroblasts.

Ganglia of homozygotes exhibit highly condensed chromosomes, chromosomes appear as bows: centriole disjunction is blocked. Mutation affects both somatic and germ cells.

Anomalous mitoses in homozygous larvae.

Abnormal mitotic activity as assayed in the larval brain. High degree of polyploidy. Chromosome non-disjunction.

The effects on viability, mitotic phenotype and mitotic progression suggest an allelic series: chbEP3515 < chbv40 < chbEP3403 < chbP4.
