Insertion of a P-element at the 3' border of exon 2, just preceding the intron.
Rough eye phenotype. Irregular deep pseudopupil. Extra R cells develop in approximately 10% of ommatidia. The extra cell can be an outer R1-6 or an inner R7 type. The extra inner R cell is positioned as the mystery cell is positioned, between R3 and R4. R8 is not affected. Ommatidia are often fused and the bristle pattern is aberrant. Pigment cells absent at a rate of 0.4%. 2.9% of ommatidia have extra cone cells and 0.74% have too few cone cells. sdk behaves non-autonomously in R cell development.
P-element or transposase source: Birmingham 2 strain.
Reverts to wild type approximately 2% of time in hemizygous males. Molecular analysis reveals that wild type revertants retain multiples of three nucleotides, retaining the open reading frame.
