In crowded conditions hemizygotes die during eclosion, those that survive beyond eclosion die shortly afterwards with defective wings. Conditions with little competition cause polyphasic lethality, most death occurring during larval or pupal stages. Pharate adults exhibit nubbin or strap wings and precocious death.
