In crowded conditions hemizygotes die during eclosion, those that survive beyond eclosion die shortly afterwards with defective wings. Conditions with little competition cause polyphasic lethality, most death occurring during larval or pupal stages. Pharate adults exhibit nubbin wings and precocious death.
