Detailed Description

Homozygotes show little if any embryonic lethality, but the lethal period is polyphasic throughout the larval and pupal stages. Some homozygous larvae show a slow growth rate and have sluggish behaviour, while others progress through the larval stages with normal appearance and behaviour, although pupation is usually delayed by a day or two. Most homozygous pupae fail to develop to late stages, although a few become pharate adults. No homozygotes eclose. Some dying homozygous larvae have necrotic gut tissue.

Pros25SuDTS/Df(3R)T-32 animals do not reach the late larval or pupal stages. Mutant larvae show delayed development and sluggish behaviour.

Brains of homozygous larvae raised at 25oC or 29oC show no apparent polyploidy or aneuploidy and chromosome morphology and anaphase figures appear normal. The mean mitotic index is somewhat reduced compared to controls, probably reflecting the slower developmental rate of the mutant larvae.

Pros261 Pros25SuDTS double heterozygotes are viable at 29oC, in contrast to Pros261 single heterozygotes. The recessive lethality of Pros261 homozygotes seen at 25oC is only partially suppressed by Pros25SuDTS/+ and the survivors are slow developing and sick.

Prosβ21 Pros25SuDTS double heterozygotes are viable at 29oC, in contrast to Prosβ21 single heterozygotes.

Pros261 Prosβ21 double heterozygotes show early larval lethality at 25oC, which is partially suppressed by Pros25SuDTS/+.

Pros261/+ can weakly suppress the lethality of Pros25SuDTS homozygotes at 25oC.

Dominant suppressor of the dominant temperature sensitive lethal effect of Pros261 or Prosβ21. Pros261 and Prosβ21 are lethal in transheterozygous condition, even at normally permissive temperatures. This synthetic lethal effect is partially suppressed by Su(DTS)-11; a small fraction of + Pros261 Su(DTS)-11/Prosβ21 + + animals survive to adulthood at 18oC.
