An Hsp70 promoter drives expression of a LamC cDNA, with a single base deletion (nucleotide 1781), resulting in a frameshift which replaces the sequence after amino acid residue 552 until the C-terminal end (residue 621) with 59 unrelated amino acids.

Embryos expressing LamChs.PS for 30 minutes at 3-5 hours of development using heat shock develop into normal, fertile flies. Expression of LamChs.PS using heat shock between 48 and 120 hours of development (second larval instar to early pupal stage) results in lethality. When LamChs.PS is expressed using heat shock during the third larval instar stage, most of the larvae do not develop into pupae, but remain alive as larvae for up to 8 days longer than control larvae. The growth of these larvae is inhibited compared to control larvae. Many of these larvae have melanotic tumours. The nuclei of salivary gland cells appear smaller than in control larvae.
