P-element insertion in the 5' untranslated region.
The chromosomes in prometaphase and metaphase I meiotic figures of mutant males are associated with a minispindle that has the appearance of an anastral spindle. This minispindle is always located between the asters but is not connected to them, and its orientation, with respect to the axis defined by the asters, is quite variable. The spindle resumes a normal configuration as meiosis proceeds, and anaphase does occur. Defects in both chromosome segregation and cytokinesis are also often seen.
