In a stage 16 mutant embryo, the longitudinal axon fascicles stall and are misrouted. Axons appear less well fasciculated than in wild-type embryos.

Embryos mutant for spen and Antp show more sclerotic material in dorsal T2 than do Antp mutants alone and the ectopic head sclerites are more sclerotinised than in spen mutants alone. In tsh mutants the T1 denticle belt is absent and the denticles themselves are smaller and more disorganised than wild type. When also mutant for spen the denticle belts are missing from all thoracic segments, and the A1 denticle belt is poorly defined.
