A 159bp in-frame deletion which removes sequences encoding per amino acids 515 to 568, including 11 Ser and Thr residues.
Flies carrying perΔC2 in a wild-type background show no affect on temperature compensation of circadian period, but have a shorter period of locomotor activity than wild type. Flies carrying per+t12.3 have a phase response curve (PRC) that would be predicted for flies with 27 hour locomotor activity periods at 27oC. Flies carrying perΔC2 have a very different PRC despite the similarity of their periods at this temperature. In flies carrying perΔC2, delays do not occur until ZT17 and advances do not occur at all at the times predicted by the per+t12.3 PRC.
perΔC2 rescues rhythmicity of free running locomotor activity in per01 flies at 25oC, but the rhythms have a shorter period than those produced by the control (per+t12.3 in a per01 background). per01 flies carrying perΔC2 show an increase in period of as much as 5 hours when moved from 20 to 27oC, compared with a 0.9 hour increase in wild-type flies.
