Expression of Mmus\Dnmt3aScer\UAS.cLa under the control of Scer\GAL4da.G32 results in a significant reduction in cell number in third larval instar wing discs. The mitotic index is slightly elevated and BrdU incorporation is reduced in metaphase and anaphase chromosomes of third larval instar brain neuroblasts. The salivary glands are reduced in size compared to controls. Salivary gland nuclei sometimes show rudimentary polytenisation, but in most cases the DNA appears similar to interphase nuclei with no obvious polytenisation.

Flies expressing Mmus\Dnmt3aScer\UAS.cLa under the control of Scer\GAL41032.hx generally die during pupal development. Some flies eclose partially and die within one day. Others eclose fully and are viable, but have etched tergites with missing cuticle. Flies expressing Mmus\Dnmt3aScer\UAS.cLa under the control of Scer\GAL4ey.PS have small or absent eyes.

Su(var)3-9unspecified/+ partially suppresses the lethality caused by expression of Mmus\Dnmt3aScer\UAS.cLa under the control of Scer\GAL41032.hx. The rescued adults are viable and fertile with a normal appearance. A large number of larvae expressing Mmus\Dnmt3aScer\UAS.cLa under the control of Scer\GAL41032.hx in a Su(var)3-9unspecified/+ background have polytene chromosomes that are similar to those of controls.

Co-expression of Mmus\DnmtScer\UAS.cLa enhances the phenotype of flies expressing Mmus\Dnmt3aScer\UAS.cLa under the control of Scer\GAL41032.hx; flies generally die during early, undifferentiated pupal stages.
