Eye colour: homozygotes have reduced red eye pigmentation. Homozygotes show adenine auxotrophy.
Selected as: a recessive mutation showing reduced red eye pigmentation and adenine auxotrophy. The initial strain carrying "ade52" - strain "H23-14" was only partially responsive to an RNA dietary supplement. It appeared that there were two classes of flies in this strain, one carrying a mutation with reduced red eye pigmentation and adenine auxotrophy (ade52) and the other carrying a mutation with normal red eye pigmentation and auxotrophy where only slowly developing survivors occur on an RNA supplement (H23-1444). Two "ade52" stocks, ade52(7) and ade52(25) have been derived from the original "H23-14" strain and they most likely carry the same mutation.
Alleles can be placed in order on the basis of relative survival on standard medium (from least to most viable): ade51, ade41, ade52(7), <up>ade55, ade56, ade58</up>.
