The midgut primordia develop normally in null embryos and the anterior midgut (AMG) begins to adopt its characteristic two-lobed structure during stage 10, but subsequent development of the AMG and the posterior midgut (PMG) is abnormal. In particular, there is little extension of the AMG lobes and no migration of the AMG or PMG precursors. Consequently, the yolk is left as an unenclosed mass that moves to various ectopic locations as other aspects of development continue.
