Flies expressing rinScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4hs.2sev at 25oC show extensive roughening of the eye, and photoreceptor recruitment is affected in many ommatidia. Polarity is severely affected in ommatidia in which orientation can be scored (those with the normal complement of photoreceptors). Many ommatidia are misrotated and/or display a non-chiral arrangement. The phenotype is less severe if the flies are raised at 18oC; in these eyes the equator is still evident, with mostly the correct chiral forms in each eye field, but many ommatidia are misrotated. The recruitment and polarity defects are evident in early third larval instar eye discs; developing photoreceptor cells are often missing and the regular wild-type arrangement and orientation of ommatidial preclusters is affected.
