Hemizygous embryos appear to have wild-type morphology. They incorporate BrdU with normal efficiency and in normal patterns throughout embryogenesis. Hatching of larvae occurs at the same rate as that of control embryos. cdc2c1/cdc2c3 larvae survive for at least 4 days after egg deposition, but their size fails to increase significantly after 1.5 days (in contrast to wild-type larvae).

cdc2c1/cdc2c2 females that have been rescued by periodic expression of cdc2chs.PS readily lay eggs as long as they are subjected to periodic heat shocks (to induce expression of cdc2chs.PS). However, after termination of periodic heat shocks, egg deposition decreases rapidly and stops completely within 2-3 days. This arrest of egg deposition can be readily reversed within 7 days after resumption of periodic heat shocks. Eggs collected from females 1 day after termination of periodic heat shocks often show abnormal spatial distribution of nuclei and the chromatin often appears abnormal. A significant fraction of embryos contain very few nuclei. A significant fraction of embryos contain very few nuclei. About two-thirds of eggs with less than 5 nuclei are not fertilised.
