Follicle cells become asymmetrically distributed over the 16-cell cyst as early as stage 2 of oogenesis. Most follicle cells still contact the germline, but some become displaced from the follicle cell monolayer, and later in oogenesis, follicle cells are often found in multiple layers over the oocyte. Squamous follicle cells are not detected in early egg chambers. Mutant phenotype when hemizygous over a deficiency is milder than the homozygous phenotype.
