Fmr1FS mutant adult males do not display any immediate recall memory (assayed immediately after training) or short-term memory (60 min after training) in the courtship behavior experimental paradigm (the male is paired with an unreceptive female during training and than paired with either receptive virgin or unreceptive pre-mated females for the memory experiments), their long-term memory, however, is intact. The flies display a range of cross-over defects in the brain mushroom body compared to controls.

Naive courtship activity is lower in Fmr1FS+Fmr13 flies than in wild-type flies (Fmr1+t14+Fmr13). However, this difference is less pronounced in aged adults compared to young adults.

Fmr1FS+Fmr13 20-dy old flies do not show a decrease in time spent courting during the training period, indicating that no learning during training is occurring. This is in contrast to the normal learning during training observed with young flies.

The majority of Fmr1FS+Fmr13 aged brains do not show any detectable cell death.

Expression of Fmr1FS fails to rescue the learning and memory phenotype of Fmr13 mutants.

Fmr1+t14 (but not Fmr1FS) rescues locomotor defects and excessive grooming behavior at all ages (day 5, 15, 25, 35) in Fmr13/Fmr1Δ83M flies; courtship behavior defects at day 15 are also rescued by Fmr1+t14 but not Fmr1FS.

The defective immediate recall and short-term memory as well as frequent defects in adult mushroom body morphology characteristic for Fmr13 mutant males are not restored by combination with a single copy of the Fmr1FS transgene.

Fails to rescue rhythmicity and courtship defects of Fmr13.
