Four genetic properties are associated with the "Scx" chromosome (which has an insertion of repetitive DNA very close to the Antp P1 promoter); loss of Antp P1 promoter function, loss of Antp P2 promoter function, derepression of the Scr promoter in cis (on the mutant chromosome) and derepression of the Scr promoter in trans (on the homologous chromosome). The ectopic sex comb teeth on the second and third legs seen in "Scx" heterozygotes are due to misexpression of Scr in cis and in trans.

Heterozygous males have an average of 2.7 ectopic sex comb teeth per second leg. The number of sex comb teeth on the first leg is normal. ScrScx/Scr4 males have the same average number of sex comb teeth per first leg as Scr4/+ males. Heterozygous males have an average of 0.1 ectopic sex comb teeth per third leg. ScrScx/Scr2 males have an average of 1.3 ectopic sex comb teeth per second leg and no ectopic sex comb teeth on the third legs. ScrScx/Scr4 males have an average of 1.6 ectopic sex comb teeth per second leg and an average of 0.1 ectopic sex comb teeth per third leg. ScrScx/Scr4; Dp(3;Y)77ab males have an average of 1.4 ectopic sex comb teeth per second leg and an average of 0.2 ectopic sex comb teeth per third leg. ScrScx/ScrTpl9 males (in which the haplolethality of the Df(3R)Tpl9 chromosome has been rescued by Dp(3;3)Dfdrv1) have an average of 8.7 ectopic sex comb teeth per second leg and an average of 5.0 ectopic sex comb teeth per third leg.
ScrScx/ScrTpl9 males (in which the haplolethality of the Df(3R)Tpl9 chromosome has been rescued by Dp(3;3)Dfdrv1) also carrying Pc21 have an average of 8.5 ectopic sex comb teeth per second leg and an average of 8.4 ectopic sex comb teeth per third leg.
