ed^2B8/ed^m1 embryos show hyperplasia of the central nervous system. ed^k01102/ed^m1 animals usually die as pupae, but adult escapers are sometimes produced in low density cultures. These escapers have mild defects in the leg; the legs have the correct number of segments, but the sex combs are malformed in males. They also have a rough eye phenotype. ed^m1/ed^ts animals shifted to the non-permissive temperature (29^oC) for 3 days at the end of larval stage 2 and then shifted back to 18^oC can survive to adulthood. These flies have extra macrochaetae, which are generally found next to macrochaetae that are normally present in wild-type flies. The density of microchaetae is also increased and the flies have a rough eye phenotype. ed^m1/ed^ts flies grown at 25^oC have irregular thickenings of wing vein L2.
