Odor-evoked depolarizations in Or43b1 mutant VM2 projection neurons are indistinguishable from depolarizations in wid-type. Spontaneous activity in these projection neurons is also unaffected by the mutation.
VM2 projection neurons (PNs) have normal dendrite morphology in mutant flies. The VM2 PNs in the mutant flies (these projection neurons are postsynaptic to "silent" ORNs due to the mutation in Or43b) show reduced spontaneous electrophysiological activity compared to wild type.
Or43b1 flies have no gross behavioral or morphological phenotypes. The ab8A neuron in Or43b1 mutants is not activated in response to fifty-five odorants that activate these neurons in wild-type flies. However, mutant neurons still show spontaneous activity. No significant difference in chemosensory behavior can be detected between Or43b2 mutant and wild-type flies.
