Mutant early embryos show a non-uniform nuclear distribution with patches of nuclei reaching the surface of the embryo. Many of the nuclei that do reach the surface subsequently fall inwards. At the time of gastrulation, massive nuclear movements occur and the nuclei at the surface of the embryo coalesce.
