Aldh17 flies are impaired in total fitness and pre-adult viability when reared under crowded conditions. Homozygous flies show reduced starvation resistance and hypersensitivity to hyperoxia compared to controls.

Aldh17/Df(2L)N22-14 adults show dramatically reduced ethanol resistance compared to controls; mutants are killed by 4% ethanol, while controls can survive at much higher concentrations. Aldh17/Aldh17 larvae also show low ethanol resistance as they are also killed by 4% ethanol, which does not affect the survival of wild-type larvae.
