The indirect flight muscles of mutant adults appear normal at the gross level. However, ultrastructurally the myofibril filament pattern often appears diffuse and the myofibrils are larger than those of wild-type controls.
Homozygous Cf2KG08941 animals reach adulthood.
No muscle impairment is apparent in Cf2KG08941 mutant larvae as they are able crawl in the same way as controls.
The flight ability of Cf2KG08941 mutant animals is severely impaired. This phenotype is exacerbated with age.
Cf2KG08941 mutants exhibit jumping defects.
No severe abnormalities are evident in the ultra-structure of the indirect flight muscles of Cf2KG08941 mutants.
The ultra-structure of the tergal depressor of trochanter (TDT) muscle in one-day old Cf2KG08941 mutants appear normal. However, the TDT of 10-day old mutants is severely disrupted. The TDT fibres are wavy and/or irregular, and the Z-discs are incompletely assembled or broken. A large percentage of the mutant myofibrils display incomplete Z-discs and M-lines. This age dependent muscle degeneration varies in penetrance. In aging flies some muscles are only moderately disrupted whereas other muscles in the same fly are severely affected.
