Scer\GAL4Act.PU-mediated expression of gwlNLSmut.Scer\UAS.P\T.T:Hsap\MYC in a gwlSr3/gwlSr6 mutants background results in viable but female sterile flies. Ovaries are completely lacking.

gwlSr3 mutants are homozygous viable and exhibit an eclosion delay. gwlSr3 adults display variably rough eyes, eroded wing margins, and missing bristles. Both sexes are sterile with strongly reduced gonads. There are few germ cells, even in newly eclosed adults; none remain a few days later.

gwlSr3/gwl6a mutants exhibit mitotic defects, leading to an increase in the mitotic index with more cells in anaphase. Mutant neuroblasts show a high frequency of defective chromatin condensation. Some regions of chromatin appear undercondensed and other regions are overcondensed. In some cells the chromosomes are uniformly overcondensed, suggesting a lengthy pre-anaphase delay.

gwlSr3/gwlSr6 adults eclose (after a delay), with variably rough eyes, eroded wing margins, missing bristles and strongly reduced gonads, though viability is reduced.

Based on viability, the following gwl alleles can be ranked from strongest to weakest as follows: gwlSr3 > gwlSr3/Df(3L)gwl3b > gwlSr6 > gwlSr6/Df(3L)gwl3b> gwlSr3/gwlSr6 > gwlSr18/Df(3L)gwl3b.
