Description

Imprecise excision of the progenitor insertion, resulting in a deletion of approximately 1.5kb that extends from the middle of the 12th intron to near the beginning of the 14th intron. The deleted sequence is replaced by a translocation of approximately 690bp from the right arm of the third chromosome.

Detailed Description

The size of the eyes and cross-sectional area of rhabdomeres is significantly smaller than normal in mosaic flies in which the eyes are homozygous (made using the "EGUF/hid" method). The mutant ommatidia are less ordered in their arrangement than normal and many contain less than the normal complement of seven rhabdomeres.

Intracellular recordings of photoreceptor potentials elicited by a bright white stimulus of 30 seconds duration show that inaExl18 mutant photoreceptors give only a small response of 5mV peak amplitude that rises slowly and decays completely to baseline in 15 seconds. The response lacks the maintained steady-state and the fast initial phasic components compared to control photoreceptors.

The average resting potential of homozygous photoreceptors in mosaic flies is normal.
