Homozygous kek5Δ1 mutants produce fertile adults. However, the mutant imagos exhibit decreased viability.

kek5Δ1 and kek5fe148/kek5Δ1 mutant wings exhibit defects in crossvein patterning with a penetrance of about 25-30%. The frequency of crossvein defects is enhanced by hemizygosity over Df(1)Exel7468 or Df(1)JA27. kek5Δ1 mutant wing defects include truncated or missing posterior crossvein, twigging or forking of the crossvein, ectopic posterior crossvein material, meandering posterior crossvein and ectopic crossveins around the anterior crossvein. The anterior crossvein is rarely deleted or truncated in kek5Δ1 mutants; more often partial or full-length ectopic crossveins appear adjacent to the anterior crossvein.

kek5Δ1 mutant wings display blisters at low frequency (less than 5%) when homo- or hemizygous, or when either placed over deficiencies for the region Df(1)Exel7468 or Df(1)JA27.
