At early stage 16, the dorsal trunk tubes of mutant embryos have a smaller diameter than those of controls, but dorsal trunk metamere length is normal. The smaller diameter of the dorsal trunk seen in mutant embryos can be detected by stage 14. Transepithelial barrier function in the trachea is normal in mutant embryos.

The tracheal luminal matrix remains narrow and dense in early stage 16 mutant embryos.

The salivary glands of mutant embryos are thinner than those of controls. Ultrastructurally, the salivary glands contain an atrophic, deformed and abnormally electron dense luminal matrix.

Mutant embryos fail to complete dorsal closure.

Endoplasmic reticulum structures are severely bloated in the dorsal trunk and salivary gland cells of mutant stage 16 embryos.
